One recurring theme that pops up from dads on The Art of Fatherhood podcast is trying to find ways to bond with their newborn baby. Some dads feel like they are not needed. It is something real and at times can feel really devastating. When you find out that you are going to be a dad there are so many feelings and ideas that race through your mind. Will I be a good dad? Are we financially ready to have a kid? What are the bonds that I will create with my child? When that joyous day arrives and you get to hold your child for the first time your world changes forever. Fatherhood is powerful. It might take a minute to feel needed, but trust me, if you are a present father those bonds will be created with you and your child.
Finding The Bonds That Connect You To Your Child
As your kids get older you will find hobbies that you both enjoy. For me, my oldest and I like talking about Marvel movies. My youngest and I will go to NHL games together. My daughters and I will play video games together and talk about music from time to time. I try not to push my hobbies on them. I don’t want to force anything. Other dads have said the same thing. You want to make sure that both of you enjoy the hobbies and activities you do together. In addition, I make myself available to them when they want to talk. The more time you look to spend with your kids the better relationship you will have with them.
Making Those Bonds Last For A Lifetime
Recently my family and I have gone to driving ranges. We are looking to all go golfing together. The older your kids get you will find more things that you will find to have in common. The more you talk with your kids and find out their interests the more the bonds that you create will last for a long time. As a sneakerhead I always love to see a family wearing the same sneakers.
