This week for the These Dads Are Doing It Right series I want to highlight some quality dads on sitcoms. These dads will make you laugh, think and invest in their parenting skills. You can tell the actors and writers made sure these dads were doing things right. In addition, if there are any other dads that you think we should check out, leave their name and info in the comment section below.
Quality Dads From Sitcoms

Phil Dunphy
Phil Dunphy dad’s style in Modern Family is defined by his “cool dad” persona, endless enthusiasm. In addition he is known for his deep love for his kids focusing on being their buddy and encouraging individuality. Plus by his actions you can tell that he is believing in them, even when they struggle. Many fans of the show think of him as a beloved but sometimes goofy figure who learns alongside them. That is a sign of good fatherhood.

Louis Huang
Louis Huang is the optimistic and mild-mannered patriarch of the Huang family in the ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat. On the show, Louis is characterized by his “glass half-full” attitude and desire to be a “nice boss”. He often mediates between his wife’s strict upbringing and his sons’ Americanized desires. Louis is a supportive father who tries to connect with his children’s interests, such as coaching Eddie’s basketball team.

Dre Johnson
Dre Johnson’s fatherhood in Black-ish centers on his struggle to instill Black cultural identity in his kids while navigating his own upper-middle-class life in a predominantly white world, often clashing with his liberal, biracial wife Rainbow and dealing with his own father’s (Pops) rigid masculinity, leading to both comedic moments and poignant lessons about race, assimilation, and what it means to be a modern Black man and father.

Ray Barone
Did you know that the character of Ray Barone is loosely based on Ray Romano’s own life and stand-up comedy routines? Romano and Phil Rosenthal did a great job of tackling some great themes in the world of fatherhood and family. Ray is seen as a good-natured sitcom father. In addition he can be immature, neurotic, and conflict-averse. He often avoids responsibility and struggles to take a stand, particularly when it involves his overbearing mother.
