Top 5 Summertime Treats

One of the best things about summertime are the treats and desserts. My family and I like to make these treats together. It can be for a party or just because. In addition there are certain summertime treats that we get when we are taking a family vacation. There are some that seem like traditions in our house. What is your favorite summertime treat? Let me know in the comments section below.

Top 5 Summertime Treats

S’mores

Hands down the BEST summertime treat has to be the S’mores. A traditional s’more is the best way to go, but over the time we have found ways to add some new features to this treat. Peanut butter cups would sometimes replace the chocolate. In the past I have made S’mores pancakes. My kids loved them. The pancake served as the graham cracker and I just added marshmallows and chocolate morsels. Plus, my oldest daughter would make me S’mores lasagna for Father’s Day. If you haven’t tried that, I suggest you look up a recipe for that version of S’mores.

Homemade Popsicles

This treat is something that my mom would make for me and my siblings in the summer. She might take Kool-Aid and add it to the homemade popsicle maker. Sometimes she would puree watermelon or another summer fruit. Now as a parent I have made some of these popsicles for my kids when they were toddlers. They loved them just like I did when I was a kid. They would give me suggestions on what type of flavors to make for them.

Strawberry Shortcake

A long-time favorite featuring biscuits layered with sweet strawberries and fluffy whipped cream. The shortcake cups are the best vehicle for this dessert. They are usually individual-sized, sponge-like cakes. It is perfect since you don’t want to overdo it especially when it is hot outside. Some people use another base other than the cups. Some of the substitutes include sweet, flaky buttermilk biscuits, buttery pound cake slices, light and airy angel food cake and rich scones.

Ice Cream/Ice Cream Truck

Summer is the best season for ice cream. Whether you have an ice cream sundae bar at home or go out with family and friends for ice cream, you can never go wrong. One of the best memories as a kid was having the ice cream truck arrive in your neighborhood during the summer nights when I was hanging out with friends. The X-men ice cream bar was one of my favorites. In addition another go to is the chocolate eclair.

Slurpee

This treat is something that my wife and I would get at my local 7-Eleven during the summer months when we were dating in college. We would pick them up and then go to the beach or just have them in the car when we would drive around the seacoast. A fun fact is that it was originally created by a Dairy Queen owner in the late 1950s. Then it became a pop culture icon after 7-Eleven licensed the product in 1966. Also, you can’t go wrong with a Blizzard from Dairy Queen.
