These Dads Are Doing It Right – Part 64 – Dads On Duty Keeping Kids Safe At School

This week’s for the Dads Doing It Right series I wanted to highlight the great community of dads who started Dads on Duty. Michael LaFitte started up this group to be there for his community. Their story went viral a few weeks ago, but I want to make sure people are still talking about them. Dads On Duty Helping Kids By Being There 

Southwood High School in Shreveport, Louisiana was in the news when reports came out that there were multiple fights on campus. The fights resulted in the arrests of 23 students. Michael LaFitte started up Dads on Duty. This group has about 40 dads in it and they have stepped up to put a stop to the violence. These men are on campus from the time students get to school to when they go home for the day. Men in this group take shifts to ensure that there are always several fathers at the school. The dads are there to tell jokes, share life advice, and just let the students know that these dads have their back. 

The Students And Staff Are Grateful 

As parents we want our kids to feel safe at school. Since Dads on Duty has arrived on campus the students and staff are very thankful for their presence. One student told a news outlet that the fighting immediately stopped and people started going to class. That student immediately felt a form of safety. They just make funny jokes like, ‘Oh, hey, your shoe is untied,’ but it’s really not untied. Dads on Duty will have a permanent presence at Southwood High, and the group would like to see other chapters form across the country. Not every student has a father figure or male role model in their life, one dad said, “so just to be here makes a big difference.” Well done Dads on Duty. Keep up the great work.
