Last year, I started the Dad Shout Out column. From time to time I share some cool dads that are putting maximum effort when it comes to fatherhood. This time I wanted to give a Dad Shout Out to all the dads out there who are the photographers for their kids when it comes to Instagram. You are the unsung heroes who have to stop what they are doing and help their son or daughter take a picture that is gram-worthy. We see your dedication to get the perfect shot that your kid will love. There are times where I have been asked by my daughter to take a photo when she feels like it will make the perfect post.
More Than Just An Instagram Photographer
Now some of this can be seen as a bit of malarkey, but there are some benefits that come from these moments. First and foremost, you get to spend quality time with your kid. You get a glimpse of what they are into and how they see the world. We live in a society where time goes by so fast. When your kid is looking for some help and they reach out to you, it speaks volumes on how they look at your relationship with them. They trust you and appreciate your take on whether or not that photo is a good one. There are times where my daughter and I would share an inside joke based on a quick Instagram photo session. My daughter even shares Instagram posts of accounts where they shout out their dad for being the photographer.
Cherish These Moments
As hobbies change from generation to generation, you have to adjust to what your kids are into and enjoy. Even though it might seem funny, it means a lot to your kid. I say embrace it and have fun with your kids. Social media has many negative aspects. We all have seen the horror stories of a person at any age becoming obsessed with social media. Yet if you talk to your kids about all the facets of social media you both can have a smart approach to that medium. It can help them create a healthy relationship with social media and will help them in the future.
