When you ask someone which era was the best one to grow up in, most of the time they will reply by saying it was the era that they grew up in. We have a certain amount of bias when it comes to answering questions like that. Parenting can be seen the same way. I have had many conversations on The Art of Fatherhood podcast and in different circles on the question of does parenting evolve through the years?
I have had some older parents say to me that they could never raise kids these days with all the different technologies out there. Younger parents feel like it must have been a struggle raising kids thirty years ago. Those younger parents have said that they use technology such as baby monitors to make sure their kids are safe. Is there one parenting generation that had it the best? I feel like that question will be debated just like asking who is the best NBA player of all time. I feel like parenting is always changing. If you strive to be a good parent, you will make those adjustments through the years to benefit your kids and your family.
How To Evolve With The Times
When new dads ask me to give them some parenting tips, I always say in the beginning try to create a routine for you and your baby. It doesn’t have to be what everyone else is doing. You have to make up a schedule that works best for you and your family. Every family is different. As your kids get older those routines change. You are not having your 10 year old kid go to bed at 7 pm. They would look at you funny as you try to have the same bedtime routine for when they were like a toddler. You have to evolve your parenting style.
There are parents who are nervous about getting their kids a smartphone or tablet. They don’t want their kids to be exposed to things at an early age or become addicted to devices. One of the biggest issues with not having your kids use tech is that the jobs of tomorrow will revolve around tech. So having them get used to some forms of technology is crucial. I have had dads and moms say to me that they didn’t have a cell phone when they were younger so why do their kids need one. While I lived that life and understand that mentality, I also know that things were different back then. If basketball practice got cancelled after school I could call my parents from the school office phone or pay phone. These days pay phones are nowhere to be found.
Embrace The Evolution To Make Things Easier
Technology, just like parenting, is always evolving. Using technology makes things easier and helps you navigate your busy day. As parents we should welcome the tech that is helpful and beneficial. Our daily to do list keeps on growing each day. Having tools around us to help make those days easier is needed now more than ever.
