These Dads Are Doing It Right – Part 285 – Great Parent & Kid Duos In The Science Field

This week for the These Dads Are Doing It Right series I want to highlight some great parent and kid duos in the science field. These families created some historic and notable contributions in the science fields. In addition, if there are any other dads that you think we should check out, leave their name and info in the comment section below.

Great Parent & Kid Duos In The Science Field

The Curie Family

The Curie Family is famous for multiple Nobel Prizes: Marie and Pierre Curie won the 1903 Nobel Physics Prize for radioactivity research, Marie won the 1911 Chemistry Nobel for discovering Polonium and Radium, and their daughter Irène & son-in-law Frédéric Joliot-Curie shared the 1935 Chemistry Nobel for creating artificial radioactivity, making them the first mother-daughter/father-in-law Nobel-winning family. Their combined work revolutionized nuclear science, leading to advancements in medicine and energy.

The Bohr Family

The Bohr Family is a prominent Danish dynasty known for its profound contributions to science, particularly physics, and for its involvement in mathematics and sports. Neils is the most famous member. He was awarded the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on atomic structure. In addition, he founded the Niels Bohr Institute and was a central figure in the development of quantum mechanics. One of Niels’ six sons and a distinguished nuclear physicist. He won the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physics, making the Bohr’s one of only six father-son pairs to both win Nobel Prizes.

The Thomson Family

J.J. Thomson and his son George Paget Thomson have made some notable achievements in the science fields. J.J. Thomson won the 1906 Nobel Physics Prize for discovering the electron as a particle. In addition, his son, George won the 1937 Nobel Physics Prize. He won it for demonstrating that electrons also behave as waves a key concept in wave-particle duality. Their complementary discoveries formed cornerstones of quantum physics, showing particles can exhibit both wave and particle properties.

The Bell Family

The Bell Family legacy centers on Alexander Melville Bell, a phonetician who developed the visual phonetic system Visible Speech to teach the deaf. Plus,  his son, Alexander Graham Bell, is the famous inventor of the telephone. He used his father’s work with speech and acoustics. Therefore he and his dad have profoundly influenced education for the deaf and communication technology, with both deeply involved in helping the hearing-impaired.
