This week for the These Dads Are Doing It Right series I am putting the spotlight on dads who are teaching coding to their kids and others. These dads are not only teaching kids, but helping parents understand how to code as well. Antoine Patton – Photo Patch Foundation

Antoine Patton is the founder and executive director of Photo Patch Foundation. Raised in Buffalo, New York, Antoine officially committed to serve at-risk youth while he was serving an eight-year prison sentence for criminal possession of a weapon. While in prison he learned how to code and pledged to use technology to open doors for others. Released from prison in 2014, Antoine immediately launched Photo Patch Foundation with plans to serve the 2.7 million youth with parents in prison. More recently, Antoine has been teaching youth how to build apps and websites. He taught his daughter Jay Jay how to code, leading her to develop her own app. Antoine has a liberal arts degree from Bard College. He is the author of From Cages to Stages: How S.T.E.M. Changed My Life. Antoine is a 2019 Echoing Green Fellow.

Andrew B. Williams – DADS CODE: Dads Advancing Daughters & Sons

Andrew Williams is an American academic in the field of engineering. He is currently the Dean of Engineering and the Louis S. LeTellier Chair for The Citadel School of Engineering in Charleston. In addition, he started up a group called DADS CODE. DADS CODE: An online community for fathers who want to teach their children how to code. The acronym stands for Dads Advancing Daughters & Sons in CODE. Learn more about his work on his website. 

Coding With Dad 

Coding with Dad is a informative site dedicated to help people of all ages learn to code. Created by Grace, Kate and their Dad, this site is interesting, explorative and most of all fun.  The girls help to explain coding projects and demonstrate how to create them for yourself. Therefore, by watching these exciting and fun videos you will be able to create your own games, make programs to solve problems and create projects that can even be used for demonstrating school projects. Coding can be used to create interactive slideshows, solve math problems, test ideas and even make a physics simulator. Imagine it, code it, create it.

Bryson Payne – Teach Your Kids To Code 

Bryson Payne has a Ph.D. in computer science and is a leading cybersecurity expert. He is the Director of the Center for Cyber Operations Education at UNG, the Director of the National Cyber Warrior Academy, and other titles. He is a TEDx speaker on “How to Teach Kids to Code”. His first book, Teach Your Kids to Code, has sold over 50,000 copies, is published in six languages and his online courses, “Teach Your Kids to Code”, “Learn Java the Easy Way”, and “Real World Ethical Hacking” on Udemy have over 30,000 students enrolled. In addition, Bryson speaks English, Spanish, French, Russian and Mandarin Chinese. He resides in Atlanta, Georgia, with his wife and two sons.
