We want to pass on values that will help our kids with their future. One of those values that might help is teaching them to be authentic. Not only can you do this with your words, but your actions will speak louder. The earlier you set that foundation of authenticity the easier it will be for them to apply it themselves. You may be wondering how you can teach this to your kids. I want to share a few of my own experiences and ones I have heard from fellow dads on my Art of Fatherhood podcast.
Teaching Your Kid How To Be Authentic
In the sea of social media trends and getting lost in the shuffle, teaching your kids on how to be themselves can be tricky. One of the ways you can do this is to encourage your child to embrace their unique qualities. Let them find their talents. Let them discover what fuels their passion. Don’t encourage what you wanted when you were their age, but let them find their own path. I have had many conversations with athletes on my podcast. They have seen parents live vicariously through their kids when it comes to playing sports. Most of the time a child will play a sport because they like it, but make sure it is their passion that is fueling that decision.
Encouraging Them To Explore
One of the ways you can encourage them is to create a safe place at home where your child can share their thoughts and ideas. Let them talk to you about all of the things that they are thinking about. After listening to them make sure you give them opportunities where they can try new things. It can be an after-school program or something where they can be creative in a forum of their choosing. Some of the dads I talk to say that they will take part in that forum if family members are able to participate as well. This is a fantastic way to bond with your kids.
All of these ideas listed above can not only teach your kid to be their authentic self, but you are helping them find their path. You can be a good small part of their great big lives. You know who else shares that mentality? Red’s. They are a founder-owned brand that has been crafting burritos and breakfast sandwiches using only the highest quality, premium, non-GMO ingredients, including antibiotic-free meats and cage-free eggs. Red’s, started by Mike Adair, is looking to help fuel your day with delicious breakfast sandwiches and meals. They are deeply committed to authenticity, staying true to who they are as a brand, and that’s one of the core reasons I’m proud to team up with them. You can find Red’s burritos and breakfast sandwiches at your local grocery store in the freezer aisle or at RedsAllNatural.com.
Please note: I am working with Red’s on a sponsored campaign. I am receiving payment for my work, but my thoughts are my own.
My wife and I try to lead by example, Art. It looks like you and your wife tries to do the same thing. Keep up the great work.
I appreciate that, Dylan!
I absolutely love this. We need more of this especially when it comes from a dad’s voice.
Thank you, Tammy.
