A new week means a new post for Collector of the Week here at The Art of Fatherhood. As a fellow geek and collector of all things Pop Culture I wanted to showcase some cool collections that dads share in our community. We talk about the latest movies, comic books, and video games that we are enjoying at the moment.
This Week’s Collector – Creed Anthony – Finding His Way Into Collecting Comic Books
This week’s collection is a unique story. It comes from my friend Creed Anthony. He is an awesome guy. I have the great pleasure to call him a friend. He and I geek out of comic book movies. Now he is finding his way into the world of comic books. This is what he had to say about his comic book collection.
For me, I guess it is fair to say I’m late to the game. I have appreciated comic book characters my whole life. I have enjoyed the movies and the shows, but I never really collected comics as a kid. To be honest, I didn’t pay close attention to them until I co-wrote a play (for middle schoolers) about comic book writers. I started checking out comics from my local library, borrowing from friends, and eventually I found out about Free Comic Book Day – and that got me into my local comic book shops. Now I’m tracing stories, characters and artists.
It’s been fun to read some of the arcs that have inspired the big screen movies. I don’t have a huge collection (maybe about 500 or so), but I do love what I have. I also enjoy the search – finding comics in odd places. I’ve joked that this is my midlife crisis. I’ve started an Instagram page @amreadingcomics and a small private Facebook group to share adventures. My kids occasionally join me in my adventures, but they really prefer the movies to the comics. At any rate, it is a fun new hobby for me that allows me a little bit of an escape each day. One frame at a time.
If you have a suggestion for me, send it to me at @amreadingcomics on Instagram.
Love the story Creed and the collection. Thanks for sharing your story.
