How we went from from building with bricks to building memories. It first started out when my oldest daughter, Lily got a LEGO set for her birthday a few years ago. It was from the Friends series. When we opened up the box, Lily and her sister, Jordan just wanted to create the people. My job was to put the set together. I didn’t mind doing that at all. At that point I didn’t know if they would want to keep playing with that set. It turns out that one set started my daughters love for LEGO play sets.
The Building Begins…
We would get some small sets here and there. I wanted to have them help me build the sets. One reason was that they could have a sense of accomplishment once they finished creating that building, car, or ship. Another reason is that they would learn how to follow directions other than from me, my wife, or a teacher. There are many benefits of kids playing with LEGO sets that you as parents already know. It is also a great way of “unplugging” and just being able to chat with your kids. I am so glad my daughters love playing and building with LEGO.
What I like even more is how my love for Star Wars was now shared with my daughters. I think I have to thank LEGO for a little of that. My daughters and I love picking out Star Wars LEGO sets to build. We make up stories with each set. We had built a few of the vehicles from the Star Wars LEGO line. Once completed we fly them around and make laser sounds as we try and shoot each other’s ship down.
Everyone Is In The Mix….
That was a few years ago. Now our love for LEGO is still going strong. We even got our wife into the mix as well. Over Christmas I got her the LEGO FRIENDS Central Perk set. When I told my daughters that I got their mom a LEGO set they were excited. My wife really enjoyed putting the set together. She now has the finished set in her home office.
As my kids get older they are looking for more challenging sets from LEGO. One of the sets the we got last year was the Downtown Diner. This time my help was not needed. It was all my daughter’s hard work. That set is now hanging out in her bedroom.
A Whole New Set
When the LEGO Creator series came out with the Bookshop I knew my daughters would love this set just as much as the diner. I showed them the set from the LEGO magazine we get each month. They both love to read and the of course enjoy building LEGO sets so this was a set that was going to be a home-run.
The latest addition to the LEGO Modular Buildings series, this three-story bookshop, and adjoining townhouse is crammed full of fun features and has all the character of a quaint European town. The house and bookshop itself draw on inspiration from variety sources such as the Painted Ladies in San Francisco and the buildings of Amsterdam.
The 2,504-piece build features a three-story bookshop and adjoining modular town house building, which are full of surprising details including a reading nook – where any one of the five LEGO minifigures included in the set can settle down to read ‘Moby Brick’ (or any other book) in the peace and quiet of the detailed bookshop.
The LEGO Creator Expert Modular Buildings series is a premium collection of advanced, interconnecting buildings, featuring authentic designs from around the world. They are meant for adults and teenagers with a passion. From authentic buildings and classic cars to other objects of desire, LEGO Creator Expert advanced sets offer a world of nostalgia, escapism, self-expression, pure enjoyment, and surprise.
If you are looking for a great way to talk and bond with your kids without any distractions I find that LEGO is good bet. It is just you and your kids at a table building sets and memories together.
Please note: LEGO sent me the Bookshop set from the Creator series, but my thoughts are my own.
