This week for the These Dads Are Doing It Right series I am talking about great dads in Star Trek. Below are a few examples of great dads in the Star Trek Universe. In addition, if there are any other dads that you think we should check out leave their name and info in the comment section below.
Great Dads In Star Trek
William T. Riker
Captain William T. Riker is played by Jonathan Frakes who was a guest on the Art of Fatherhood podcast. Riker saw many peaks and valleys as a father. William and his wife, Counselor Deanna Troi lost their son, Thaddeus Riker. Despite all of the pain he experienced losing Thad, he was a fantastic father to Kestra. Riker and his family live in an ideal family setting. They have time to do the things that most families here on Earth love to do. Add in the fact that Riker didn’t have a great relationship with his own dad, he broke the cycle and is a great dad.
Geordi La Forge
Commodore Geordi La Forge is a fantastic father who raised two excellent daughters who became Starfleet officers. His daughter, Sidney La Forge was a pilot. In addition, his other daughter, Ensign Alandra La Forge was an engineer. There was a great story arc where Geordi and Alandra were working together to fix Geordi’s colleague and friend, Data. His daughters taught him lessons as well. That is a great sign of a dad who has unconditional love. Those dads are open to learn from their kids.
Miles O’Brien
Miles O’Brien was seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine series. Even though he had the daunting job of Chief of Operations, he wanted to make sure he was there for his two kids. He has one daughter, Molly O’Brien and one son, Kirayoshi O’Brien. When Molly fell through a time portal and turned into a killer, Miles and Keiko O’Brien did whatever they could to help her out and keep her safe. Just another sign of a dad doing it right.
George Kirk
In an alternate timeline, James T. Kirk’s dad, George made the ultimate sacrifice to protect his crew and his wife and newborn son. James grew up and look for inspiration from his dad when he faced tough decisions being Captain of the USS Enterprise. In addition, George went down with his ship to not only secure his family’s safety, but pave the way for others on the ship to help make a difference for years to come.
