These Dads Are Doing It Right – Part 289 – Fantastic Dads On TV

This week for the These Dads Are Doing It Right series I want to showcase some fantastic dads on TV. These dads set the bar high when it comes to dads on TV shows. Part of who their character is defined by the way they look at fatherhood. In addition, if there are any other dads that you think we should check out, leave their name and info in the comment section below.

Fantastic Dads On TV

Randall Pearson – This Is Us

Randall Pearson is one of the three characters on the hit NBC drama This Is Us. He is played by Sterling K. Brown. Randall is a high-achieving perfectionist. In addition, Randall is known for his intelligence, deep sensitivity, and a goofy sense of humor.  He is a devoted father to three daughters, Tess, Annie and Deja. In the series you see this depicted many times about how much he cares for his kids.

Ted Lasso – Ted Lasso

To me, Ted Lasso is one of the best characters on TV during a time when we needed the show and this character. Ted represents a modern, vulnerable, and loving father figure who is not afraid to show affection, admit mistakes, and prioritize emotional intelligence. Even besides Ted, the show explores many father and child dynamics. In the series, Ted left the United States to coach a soccer team in the UK while his son and wife are back in the US. His marriage is on the rocks and you can see not being their for his son weighs on him. The series for now has Ted moving back two be with his son.

Jason Seaver – Growing Pains

Jason Seaver, played by Alan Thicke, was a groundbreaking TV dad on Growing Pains. Back then in the 80’s Seaver was played as being a hands-on, empathetic psychiatrist who worked from home to support his family. This dad was seen as a progressive, “work-from-home” father. In addition, he represented a shift towards gender-equitable parenting in the 1980s. Jason moved his career around to so that his wife, Maggie, could follow her passion in a career as a reporter. He was a great role model for his kids in all aspects.

Eric Taylor – Friday Night Lights

Eric Taylor is a character that is played by Kyle Chandler in Friday Night Lights. Taylor’s character is defined by his role as a stern yet nurturing father to his daughters Julie and Gracie. In addition he acts as a father figure to his players as well. In the show he emphasizes character, discipline, and life lessons. He often tells people the phrase, “Clear eyes, full heart, can’t lose.” He is focused on shaping young men into adults, prioritizing character over just winning games.
