Collector of The Week – A Remarkable Captain America Collection

A new week means a new post for Collector of the Week here at The Art of Fatherhood. As a fellow geek and collector of all things Pop Culture I wanted to showcase some cool collections that dads share in our community. We love to see this passion in what people collect. We talk about the latest movies, sports memorabilia, a Captain America collection, comic books and video games that we are enjoying at the moment.

This Week’s Collector – A Remarkable Captain America Collection

This week’s collector is from Andrew. He has a great site called, Mommy’s Busy where he talks about fatherhood and pop culture. Andrew is a big comic book collector. He is also Team Captain America! This was made known when Captain America: Civil War was released. Check out his collection and the story behind it. 

I’ve been collecting comics since the early 1980s, when I subscribed to Marvel Comics’ Star Wars comic. I was hooked on the format instantly and started picking up Captain America, who quickly became my all-time favorite hero. I’ve been a serious comic collector ever since. At one point, I had over 30 comic book long boxes (each box holds roughly 300 comics). But time and marriage has led to me selling off all but two long boxes.

Some of my favorite issues, covers and titles include The Avengers, Captain America, and just about anything by Alan Moore, Frank Miller and Neil Gaiman. My “Holy Grail” of comics was always Avengers #4, the first Silver Age appearance of Captain America. I managed to find a beat-up copy at a convention years ago and paid a whopping $150 or so for it at the time. I recently had it CGC graded along with a few other favorites, including an issue of Captain America Comics from the 1940s.

More On His Collection 

Cap makes up a huge part of my collection. At one point, I had a complete run of Captain America (vol.1) from #100 through #454, as well as Tales of Suspense #58-#99 (after which it became Captain America). That took a long time to complete. I still love reading comics and am trying to convert all my individual issues into trade paperbacks. There are just so many great series including Saga, Invincible, Fables, Saga of the Swamp Thing, New Teen Titans, Jon Sable Freelance, etc.. Even better, my two teenage boys have actually read a lot of these too.

My home office is a mix of total geekdom (action figures all over my desk and bookcases) and “classy” geekdom with framed original art, a framed 3,000-piece DC jigsaw puzzle and a custom made Captain America shield with real leather straps. It just makes for extra fun work meetings.
