This week for the These Dads Are Doing It Right Series I am looking at a few dads who are great authors. These authors are creating some wonderful stories that your kids are probably reading. If you haven’t checked out their work you should definitely check them out. From graphic novels to epic stories these dad authors have a ton of talent. If there is an author you want to shout out please leave it in the comment section below.
Nathan Hale – Hazardous Tales
Nathan Hale is the author and illustrator of the Eisner-nominated, New York Times bestselling graphic novel series on American history Nathan Hale’s Blades of Freedom. He also created the sci-fi horror comics One Trick Pony and Apocalypse Taco. Nathan is the illustrator of the graphic novel Rapunzel’s Revenge and its sequel, Calamity Jack. He also illustrated Frankenstein: A Monstrous Parody, The Dinosaurs’ Night Before Christmas, and many others. He lives in Utah with his family. My youngest daughter loves his Hazardous Tales series. He just came out with his 10th book called Blades of Freedom in his Blades of Freedom series. I got to interview Nathan a week ago. So look out for that interview on my Art of Fatherhood podcast series.
Minh Lê – Legacy
Minh Lê is the author of the picture books Drawn Together and Let Me Finish! and has written for the New York Times, the Horn Book Review, and the Huffington Post. Green Lantern: Legacy is his first graphic novel. A first-generation Vietnamese-American, during the day Minh is a national early childhood policy expert who went to Dartmouth College and has a master’s in education from Harvard University. Outside of spending time with his beautiful wife and sons in their home near Washington, D.C., Minh’s favorite place to be is in the middle of a good book.
Dustin Hansen – My Video Game Ate My Homework
Dustin Hansen, author of Game On! and the Microsaurs series, was raised in rural Utah, where he spent many days hiking red rock canyons that once belonged to the dinosaurs. But even the beautiful mountains couldn’t keep him away from his love of pixels and controllers. He has been writing and creating art for the video game industry for more than two decades. Dustin and his family live in rural Utah once again, where he is the current king of the family Mario Kart circuit.
I interviewed him about his book, My Video Game Ate My Homework. My daughters and I really enjoyed it. It is a funny, fast-paced adventure that shows the importance of cooperation and teamwork, as well as the importance of using your own unique abilities to solve problems. It’s illustrated in Dustin Hansen’s colorful, cartoony style, and filled with lots of sight gags and nods to video-gaming tropes. That why his is on the list of great dad authors.
Neal Shusterman
My oldest daughter loves Neal Shusterman’s Scythe book series. Neal is the author of many novels for young adults, including Unwind, which was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Everlost and Downsiders, which was nominated for twelve state reading awards are a great book series too. He also writes screenplays for motion pictures and television shows such as Animorphs and Goosebumps. The father of four children, Neal lives in southern California. He wrote a book with one of his son Jarrod called Dry. When you and your kids work together on a book you definitely make the list of great dad authors.
