A new week means a new post for Collector of the Week here at The Art of Fatherhood. As a fellow geek and collector of all things Pop Culture I wanted to showcase some cool collections that dads share in our community. We love to see this passion in what people collect. In addition, we talk about the latest movies, sports memorabilia, A Radical TMNT collection and video games that we are enjoying at the moment.
This Week’s Collector – A Radical TMNT Collection
This week’s collector is from Andrew. He and I worked together at a radio station in New Jersey. I am so happy to showcase his collection. Here is his story about the TMNT collection.
You probably want to know why the TMNT are so near and dear to me, well it all boils down to the main theme of the Turtles which is family! I love how these 4 brothers are always there for each other and always have each other’s backs…er shells. For anyone who has ever had a sibling, you can relate to the relationships that these green teens have with each other. Like any family structure, it’s complicated and even though that may be how it is, the bonds are always there. My collecting began in 1988 when my Mom bought me my first TMNT toy from Kmart, Donatello. From that point on, I was hooked.
This was something I had never seen before and the blending of Mutant Creatures, ooze and ninjitsu just made me want to collect them all! It wasn’t until around 1989 that I read my first TMNT comic book. My Dad had picked me up some comics to read when I was sick at home. That one Archie TMNT Adventures comic that he gave me, started my collection that has now grown into the thousands of books! The toys, comics and cartoons were what every kid my age was into at the time and me, my brother and our friends were no different.
We had some incredible times re-creating the best scenes from some of our favorite episodes. I guess my ongoing collecting still keeps me tied to those memories and I’m glad I can pass that on to my kids and share my love for all things TMNT so they can enjoy the Green Teens as much as I used to and still do almost 40 years later. Here’s to many more years filled with friendship, family, fun and of course PIZZA!
Thanks for sharing your collection Andrew. You collection is FANTASTIC! It is good to hear from you!
Whatcha Got?
It can be comic books, bottle caps, records, helmets or whatever you are into! I want to see what your passion is and why you started up that collection.
