We are now in the month of March. How are those New Year’s resolutions going? I am not trying to start off on the wrong foot, but just checking in with your goals for this year. If exercise was part of that plan, but you have not kept up with it, here are a few ways you can make it part of your life. If you have any suggestions please share your thoughts in the comment section below.
Keeping Up With Your Exercise Routine
One way you can keep up with your exercise goals is carving out a specific amount of time each week. You should try to workout four to five days a week. Once you make it past two weeks of working out, that workout plan will become routine. I work out in the morning. I am able to lift weights or do cardio while my family is getting ready for the day. I usually work out Monday through Friday. I am either working up a sweat on a cardio machine or lifting weights. I have weights and a cardio machine at home so that saves me time by not having to go to a gym.
No Weights? No Problem!
During the pandemic, dumbbells and kettlebells were hard to find. Once things started getting back to normal, the prices for exercise equipment skyrocketed. If you can’t afford a gym membership or weights, you can do exercises where you don’t need any equipment. I would suggest you google exercise routines that don’t require weights. There are a ton of them. Make sure you switch it up! Once your body gets used to the different exercises, it is time to try another routine. In addition if you hate the thought of running, you don’t have to run. A walk or a light jog is just as good to raise your heart rate in a good way.
You Are What You Eat
As you get older, being healthy is more about what you eat instead of working out. It sounds funny, but it is true. Your diet impacts your health. One of the best ways to look at your weekly diet is to start up a food journal. If you are not happy with your choices of food, you can switch it up. Look for healthier alternatives and you will see your health will improve. Plus, make sure you don’t eat late at night. Cutting out the late night snacks helps you maintain a healthy weight. If you put all of those elements together you should see results. Besides getting in better shape you are setting a great example to your kids.
Just started going back to the gym. I found using music helps me workout and it doesn’t feel too much like a chore.

I’d add 2 small things. Find a work-out that you like, that is a sort of play time for you, and that helps keep you going; an activity you like in and of itself. As you hit 40-45, add some balance training into the routine. It gets more and more important as you get older. Don’t won’t to be one of those doddering old dads we all see 🙂

We got to get people up and moving. Thinking about starting a YouTube channel for men 55+. Just video myself training and invite people to come along for the ride.
